VLC Beta (NEON version) is an impressive media player for Android
VLC is a media player that has been available for Mac and PC for
some time, as well as for iOS. While there has been a remote tool
available for Android that can be used to control playback of the main
application on another computer, but now there is a dedicated Android
app that can be used to play local and streaming music and video on your
phone or tablet.
Just as with the desktop version of the software, there is support
for an impressive range of file formats and you can view videos complete
with subtitles or alternative soundtracks. Auto-rotation ensures that
the best use is made of available screen space depending on the
orientation of your device, and gestures are available for controlling
volume. Volume can also be controlled using the bundled widget.
It is important to note that this is beta software and the developers
themselves point out that it is not stable and is only really suitable
for power users and hackers. In reality, it is unlikely to cause any
damage to your Android device, but don’t expect blistering performance
or uninterrupted playback at this stage. This are shaping up well, but
there is still some way to go before this is an app that is suitable for
day to day use.
If you want to take a sneak peak at what to expect from future
releases of the apps, the beta is a great way to keep in the loop. You
might find that your hardware is not supported, and this is something
that may or may not change as development continues. Despite the early
stage of development, you should find that if the app is support by your
device, it works pretty well, and as things are only going to improve,
this bodes very well indeed.
